This article is about the Pokédex feature. For a list of Pokémon, see Pokémon.

The Pokédex is one of the main elements of Pokémon GO. It is an encyclopedia of information about every Pokémon already caught or encountered by the player. As the player continues to capture new Pokémon, the Pokédex will fill each entry with information. The name Pokédex is a neologism including "Pokémon" (which itself is a portmanteau of "pocket" and "monster") and "index". The Japanese name is simply "Pokémon Encyclopedia", and it can feature every Pokémon currently in the game.

The Pokédex can be accessed at any time from the main menu by clicking on the "Pokédex" icon.

Viewing Pokémon Entries[]

Entries are pages with information about the specific Pokémon species. Pokémon that have not been captured or seen by the player will be unable to view an entry on the specific Pokémon, and will instead see the Pokédex number where it would be. These entries can be viewed by tapping on the icon of a Pokémon from the main Pokédex view.

Viewing Incomplete Entries[]

If a Pokémon has not yet been captured, but seen by the player either from a wild encounter or from a Gym, it will be an incomplete entry. These entries can be easily noticed from the overall view of the Pokédex as the Pokémon's image will be a silhouette only. These entries will only display the seen, caught, lucky, and shadow counters, with the "seen" counter being the only one with a number above 0. Any other information normally present will either be blank or unknown.

Viewing Complete Entries[]

If a Pokémon has been captured, it will be a complete entry. These entries feature the full Pokémon's image which can be seen from the main Pokédex view. Weight and height information will be present, and a blurb about the Pokémon can also be viewed. If the player has captured both genders of the species, the Pokémon's image can be toggled between the two. If a shiny Pokémon has been captured, the shiny form can also be viewed.

Trivia[]

  • Pokémon can be added to the Pokédex by simply encountering them. If the player does not capture the Pokémon, it will appear with limited information in the Pokédex.
  • If the player encounters a new Pokémon in a Gym, it will appear with limited information in the Pokédex.
  • There are currently only two Pokémon in the Pokédex with an unknown region. These Pokémon are Meltan and Melmetal.
